Another Sad Love Song by Khalid

I fought the demons that lie in between us

They’d think we’re perfect if they’d ever seen us, but

I guess this sounds like another sad love song

I can’t get over how it all went wrong

Khalid’s “Another Sad Love Song” is about a love that was thought to be solid and healthy but ended in heartbreak. One side of the story, Khalid, explains how he tried to fix the issues between them, but ultimately, it was not enough to keep the romance afloat. He also says that he and his partner seemed perfect to the outside world as if nothing was wrong in their relationship and pleased. Khalid is touching upon how in this era of social media, public relationships tend to only reveal the positive aspects of relationships and obscure the negatives. He even makes the remark on how many love songs that are written today follow this same theme of how things do not always appear as they seem, which introduces the chorus of “I guess this sounds like another sad love song.”

This soft pop melody might surprise listeners who read the lyrics first, as the tune is upbeat, despite the somewhat depressing lyrics. What makes this song work is that Khalid is not just describing a failed relationship, but he is establishing a recurring theme in most relationships: they can be fake. His song is not meant to depress his audience, but to leave an “it is what it is” mentality and accept that this is just the way things are today, which explains the upbeat rhythm.
