When we are young, we are ignorant of many of the challenges relationships bring. Our partner becomes our whole world because we do not have responsibilities that factor into our love lives. As we grow up, however, life’s complications begin to intrude on our relationships, and suddenly, love is not the only influence that keeps people together. That said, Chance refers to Wendy, the fictional character in Peter Pan who strove to hold on to her adolescence. Thinking she would “never grow old,” Chance is holding on to the pure and uncomplicated love he once had with his partner. Their love for one another was innocent, similar to how children perceive love.
Furthermore, in the movie, Wendy waited for Peter Pan by the open window, ready to take flight on fun adventures with him. Chance uses this imagery to rap that the window that was once opened has now closed, paralleling the dwindling of his relationship. My favorite line, “we don’t do the same drugs no more,” serves as a metaphor for his ruptured relationship, implying they are no longer compatible as before. Not only are his lyrics tragic and dejected, but his melody is sorrowful. The slow piano in the background elucidates the emotion of a heartbreak that was thought to last forever. For these reasons, the music and lyrics combine to tug at the heartstrings of heartbroken listeners.
