Emotionless By Drake
And all she did was post pictures for people at home
‘Cause all that mattered was impressin’ everybody she’s known
I know another girl that’s cryin’ out for help
But her latest caption is “Leave me alone”
I know a girl happily married ’til she puts down her phone
I know a girl that saves pictures from places she’s flown
To post later and make it look like she still on the go
Look at the way we live
In his “Emotionless,” Drake tackles the difficulties of finding a girl who sees past his fame and wealth, which he argues social media plays a big part of. In the line “And all she did was post pictures for people at home, ‘Cause all that mattered was impressin’ everybody she’s known.” Drake criticizes how our generation only cares about posting pictures to show off wealth and happiness to people they barely know, people they want to impress. People have stopped living in the moment and only live on their phones, which I believe is caused by the rising power of social media and its influence on our self-worth. For example, the line “I know a girl that saves pictures from places she’s flown, To post later and make it look like she still on the go” illustrates this sentiment, in where people only focus on how their money and popularity are depicted for the public.
The rap song features singing riffs from pop-icon Mariah Carey, which feminizes the song, pinpointing less on society as a whole, but on the women in Drake’s life, he sees act this way. The song has a satisfying balance between upbeat notes and moments of silence, which I believe are meant to introduce flexibility into the body of the music. Ultimately, with the message of fake wealth and popularity combined with the sounds of Carey, a diva of sorts, the song ironically works.
